    Susan joined Focus in February 2017. Specialising in the development and commissioning of primary care and community services, including creating opportunities for the third sector, Susan spent over 15 years working inside the NHS. In a rash moment (coinciding with a milestone birthday) she decided to try life on the other side of the table and has worked in and with providers of health and social care ever since, helping them to promote their services aligned to national and local priorities. She describes this as "translating marvellous stuff".

    Despite her experience as a Director in a PCT and a stint at the Department of Health, Susan believes that she can have a far greater impact on the improvement of services for vulnerable people through working with local charities than she ever could in these strategic organisations.

    In her spare time, Susan flies kites; a pass time riddled with management analogies!

  • Nigel Bland

    Nigel Bland

    Director of Finance

    After gaining his degree at Birmingham University Nigel qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. He remained in the accounting profession until joining Dudley Building Society in 1994, and became their Finance Director in 2000.

    More recently he moved into the Charity sector, becoming Director of Finance and Resources at Queen Alexandra College before joining Focus in August 2016 to fulfill a similar role. Nigel lives in the Solihull area where he and his wife are keen walkers and sports fans ,with a particular interest in track and field athletics and motor sport.

    I joined Focus in April 2016 as Director of Operations. I have 28 years experience in care, education and healthcare, working with people of all ages and abilities in various roles including Tutor, Registered Manager and Director of Residential Services.

    Optometry Lead

    Andrew qualified as an optometrist in 1991 and leads the vision rehabilitation team for the UK based charity Focus Birmingham. He works with rehabilitation workers, dispensing opticians, counsellors and optometrists to provide a holistic low vision service and has won the UK Macular Society “Optometrist of the Year” award.

    Andrew is a senior visiting lecturer at Aston University (UK) as well as teaching on the Vision Rehabilitation Masters program at the German Jordanian University in Amman.

    Andrew is currently a partner in a European Union “TEMPUS” project in Jordan and Palestine. The project is developing teaching materials and providing training opportunities for optometrists looking to establish local vision rehabilitation services in the Middle East.

    Marketing and Fundraising Manager

    I studied Business and Marketing at London Metropolitan University and I went on to become a Marketing Assistant for Universal Direct part of the Universal Group in London for a few years. I then worked within the fundraising and marketing departments for a number of charities in London from Hospitality Action, Barnardos, The Prostate Cancer Charity to the Alzheimer’s Society.

    I relocated to the West Midlands at the end of 2010 and worked for a national charity called Cavell Nurses’ Trust where I was a catalyst in shaping their fundraising and marketing strategy as well as running successful campaigns over 3 years I was there.

    I have recently completed my CAM in Digital Marketing as I enjoy integrating digital marketing with traditional methods of marketing and fundraising into campaigns. I enjoy engaging with the community Focus Birmingham have developed both online and through a number of external relationships.

    Secretary to Focus Birmingham Board

    Julie Roberton became Secretary to the Focus Birmingham Board in December 2014. She has worked at the Solicitors Regulation Authority for many years in various secretarial and administration roles and more recently as an Administration Manager for the Forensic Investigation Department. Julie lives in Redditch with her husband, daughter and lovely border collie dog.

    Colette McMahon

    Facilities Manager

    Colette McMahon joined Focus Birmingham in June 2009 as a Resource Co-Ordinator. During her time here she has been involved with a lot of the changes to our buildings and contracts as well as driving the processes to ensure our excellent record in Health & Safety. She is qualified in IOSH Managing Safety and was promoted to Facilities Manager in 2014.

    Her previous experience was as a Customer Service Manager for HSBC Bank and three years as a buyer for Dollond and Aitchison Opticians.

    In her personal life she is a mother to two grown up children who are at University. Hobbies include going to watch Aston Villa, gardening and spending time with her family. She hopes to continue her career with Focus and to obtain more qualifications in Facilities Management.
