Our day services teams work with adults from the age of nineteen upwards, with no upper age limit, to deliver stimulating programmes of activities which are tailored to the needs of the individual. We specialise in working with people with visual impairment and other complex needs and providing appropriate support so that each person can achieve their full potential.
First impressions count and when people visit Focus Birmingham Day Centre for the first time, they comment on the light, bright and modern environment in which we work and the positive and friendly atmosphere that is so apparent. You can get a sense of this by viewing our image galleries on the walls or by arranging a tour of our facilities in Harborne, Birmingham. We welcome visits by prior appointment, so potential services users and their families, friends and carers as well as members of the professional community such as social workers, continuing healthcare nurses and schools are always welcome. Please call us on 0121 478 5200 or contact us here.
Our activities enable individuals to gain life skills that build self-esteem, confidence and independence. Examples of activities include:
Each day is well structured and the activities are varied. A hot meal is provided and we can meet individual dietary needs and accommodate specialist means of feeding such as tube-feeding. In addition, our day service benefits from full time on site physiotherapist, Aquatic therapy sessions, Aromatherapy sessions, nail care service and trained first aid personnel.
We aim to deliver personal and individual support; our staff are well trained and highly motivated. Staff receive training in areas such as effective communication, using languages such as Makaton, up to date Manual Handling, equality and diversity, crisis prevention and intervention. The suitability of all staff to work with vulnerable adults is verified by reference to the Disclosure and Barring Service. Staff are organised into six diverse teams with groups of up to fifteen service users per team.
For parents considering a next step for their son or daughter following school, we are a wholly appropriate choice. Our activities are not based upon a curriculum but acknowledge that we are dealing with adults who have rights, including the right to independence . We will work with individuals to address any identified need that is holding them back so that they can fully achieve their potential.
Focus Birmingham offers more than traditional day services; low-vision is often left undiagnosed and can severely restrict an individual’s capacity to achieve. When we welcome someone to our day services, we will ensure that a low-vision assessment is performed and will identify any action that is required.
Focus Day services are offered from Monday to Friday for fifty-two weeks of the year, other than Christmas week, public and bank holidays. We have a fleet of nine minibuses and can arrange travel from locations across Birmingham. The quality of services is such that we also welcome people from further a field who are able to make appropriate independent travel arrangements.
We also welcome enquiries about work experience, internship and apprenticeship opportunities. If any of these interest you, please click on ‘Work for us’.
