Assessment, advice and signposting

To start the process of supporting you we carry out our Sight Loss MOT. This is a short conversation over the phone to identify your needs to find out how we can help you. We are then able to build a tailored package of support for you, which might include services we offer, or putting you in touch with other partner organisations, including the RNIB, our delivery partner.

Guidance and support

We offer a range of services across Birmingham to help people with Sight Loss improve their quality of life:

Low Vision clinic

Our award winning low vision clinic can help you better understand your eye condition and assist you to learn how to use your remaining sight to its best potential. Our local NHS contract means we can supply specialist low vision magnifying aids free of charge, as well as demonstrating improvements that can be made with technology, lighting and contrast. Our wide range of testing equipment allows the team to measure and write reports about your vision to help with work assessments, benefit claims or education health care plans.

Counselling service

We understand that losing sight can place pressures on many areas of your daily life including your mental well-being. To help with these problems we offer a one to one counselling service delivered by a BACP registered counsellor. These sessions can help you explore and develop strategies to cope with common stresses and anxiety that can be associated with sight loss.

Information, advice and guidance service

Our expert IAG coordinators are available to provide information, advice and guidance on all issues around living with sight loss. They hold regular sight loss advice clinics at accessible locations across Birmingham so you don’t have to travel too far. They are also available over the phone and email every day to answer any questions you might have.

Living with sight loss training courses

Our living with sight loss course is free to attend and aims to give you information and advice about living with your sight loss. As well as finding out more about your eye condition and talking to other people experiencing the same issues as you, we will discuss the procedures at the eye hospital and the benefits of registration. You will learn techniques to make the most of your vision and hear about the latest gadgets, specialist equipment and assistive technology that could make your life a little easier.

Enablement service

Our enablement service is all about supporting you to gain or maintain skills that enable you to lead an independent and fulfilled life. We can support you to find the right piece of equipment or technology to support everyday skills such as reading, cooking or getting out and about. Our enablement coordinator can come out to your home to carry out a home assessment and provide you with advice on home safety and equipment that can help you day to day. We also have our volunteer tech buddies who can help you improve your ability to use technology such as tablets and mobile phones.
