At Focus Birmingham, we are driven by a simple yet powerful mission: to improve lives and create opportunities for individuals with care and support needs, empowering them to live life to the fullest. We’re proud to share the profound impact that such generosity has had on the individuals we support through our Assistive Technology Appeal.

A Generous Gift: The Power of Assistive Technology

Thanks to remarkable donation of £6,700 from the Noel Sweeny Foundation, we were able to enhance the lives of the adults who attend our Complex Care Day Service in Harborne. The donation enabled us to purchase a range of adaptive switched and assistive technologies, offering newfound independence and control to people who face complex care needs.

The results have been inspiring. Cardell can now control the bubble machine during his sensory sessions, and Sophie had a blast making an ice-cream smoothie using one of our new switches. Jason, though initially surprised by the sensation, now loves the massage pillow, and Kalem’s enthusiasm for cooking has soared, thanks to the new blenders.

Perhaps one of the most heart-warming stories is Waqas, who struggled with eye strain while using a previous assistive device. This donation allowed us to purchase a Head Mouse Nano, which Waqas now uses to continue his love of gaming - this time with a reflective dot on his forehead instead of eye strain. The generosity has kept Waqas gaming, and for that, we are so grateful!

Martyn’s Story: A Life Transformed

Martyn, a vibrant individual with multiple health challenges, is one of the many adults who have experienced the life- changing benefits of assistive technology. Martyn has cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, and sight loss, yet his enthusiasm for life is boundless especially his support for his beloved Arsenal and the time he spends with his family at Severn Valley Railway where he is a member. Through the adaptive switches made possible by your donation, Martyn has gained more control over his environment, from choosing to enjoy bubbles during sensory sessions to joining in on cooking activities where he mischievously turns on the blender, much to the delight of everyone around him.

Not only has Martyn’s confidence and independence grown within our centre, but his family has also noticed a remarkable change. His father shared, “The switch programme has allowed Martyn to grow and recognise enjoyable outcomes. It’s been wonderful to see.”

Empowering Our Staff to Empower Others

The donation has also funded essential training for our staff in the use of communication technologies like Grid and Smartbox. These devices are crucial for many of our service users who rely on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to express themselves. This training ensures that our staff can fully support individuals in their communication journeys, fostering greater social integration and cognitive development.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We are immensely grateful to the Noel Sweeney Foundation for making all of this possible. From sensory sessions to cooking fun, from gaming to greater independence, this donation has truly transformed lives.
